Before you start
- Board size: best at 8 in. At 6 in, pieces 7, 8, 11, 13, 12 get narrower than 7 mm. Use 1 in thick XPS foam with a double-sided adhesive sheet, scored about ¼ in deep.
- Edge pieces: 6 of the 22 pieces touch the board edge (2, 5, 10, 20, 21, 22). Cut them with about 1 in extra on the edge sides so the fabric wraps down the side, and remember a frame lip hides about ¼ in all round.
- Watch these pieces: 7 (6 mm), 8 (6 mm), 11 (7 mm), 13 (8 mm), 12 (8 mm) are the narrowest at 8 in. Give them a thin cotton, an extra-generous margin, and tuck them last.
- Tucking order: start with the big pieces 2, 10, 5, 20 and work in to the smallest (11, 8, 7). Tuck the front grooves as you go and wrap the board sides at the end.
- Similar colors: A and D; C and E; G and I are close. Choose fabrics with a clear difference in lightness, or the shapes will blend.
